Privacy Policy

1. Introduction
MovieWatcher ("we", "our", or "the app") respects your privacy. This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our website and services.
2. Information We Collect
When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, name, and profile picture. We store this to provide your account and personalize the app. We also store the data you create in the app: your watchlist, watched movies, ratings, and collections.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to run the service: to show your watchlist, watched history, and personalized recommendations (e.g. "For You" based on your highly rated movies). We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
4. Cookies and Storage
We use authentication tokens (and related storage) so you stay signed in. We may use local storage for preferences such as dark mode. Movie data is fetched from our API and may be cached to improve performance.
5. Third-Party Services
We use Google for sign-in and The Movie Database (TMDB) for movie information. Their use of data is governed by their respective privacy policies. We do not control data collected by Google or TMDB.
6. Data Retention and Your Rights
We retain your account and movie data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your data by contacting us or, where available, through account or profile settings. If you are in the European Economic Area or other regions with similar laws, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data.
7. Social Features & Your Username
When you use social features you choose a public username (a pseudonym). Other users see your username and profile picture — not your real name or email. Your username, profile picture, watched/watchlist activity you make visible, and aggregate stats (such as watched count and top genres) are shown on your public profile according to your visibility settings.
8. Friends & Visibility
Adding a friend is mutual — both people accept the connection, and we store the fact that you are connected. Friends can see everything on your profile, including your full watched list, watchlist, ratings, and activity, regardless of your public-visibility flags. People who are not your friends only see a limited profile plus anything you have explicitly marked public. You can block a user; blocked users are hidden from you and cannot view your profile, message you, or send you friend requests.
9. Private Messages
You can send direct messages to friends, including sharing a movie. Message content is stored on our servers so it can be delivered and shown in your conversation history, and is visible to you and the friend you are messaging. Sharing a movie sends that movie — and any note you attach — to that friend. We retain messages for as long as the conversation exists or until deleted in line with our retention practices. Do not share sensitive personal information in messages.
10. Contact
For privacy-related questions or requests, please contact us through the contact option provided in the app or on the website (e.g. support email or contact form).
